PUL To Honor World Press Freedom Day

Monrovia May 1, 2020)The Press Union of Liberia will on Sunday May 3, 2020 join the rest of the world in celebrating World Press Freedom day in Liberia.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 every year as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the windhoek Declaration , a statement of free press principles put together by African  newspaper journalists in Windhoek  in 1991.

Journalists in Liberia have in past years converged in different parts of the country in celebration of the day as part of the Union’s decentralization process.

This year’s celebration was expected to be celebrated in Grand Kru County to provide Journalists the opportunity to provide coverage for issues concerning the well-being of ordinary Liberians.

However, the celebration has been moved to Monrovia due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease in the country.

The PUL is therefore inviting only heads of Auxiliaries of the Union for the celebration as part of the health protocols in line with the Coronavirus.

There will be brief statements from the President and few invited guests which will be live for others to follow.

The Union is urging all journalists to continue to follow the approved health measures by health Authorities in order to remain safe.

Meanwhile, the PUL is commending a Liberian Journalist Sam Howard for contributing to work of the PUL.

Mr. Howard,  a former BBC reporter and former staff of the talking drum studio donated 50, 000.00  Liberian dollars to the PUL  Thursday. Mr Howard is presently working with the UN system in Mali .

The Union believes  that the donation  will assist the PUL address some of its needs including  protective materials to fight the Coronavirus pandemic .

The Press Union of Liberia is also calling on business community to contribute to the improvement of the operating environment of the Media.
